Heritage Furniture

Furniture for listed, heritage and notable buildings

Schools and universities, public spaces, buildings of architectural note and places of worship all require furniture with careful planning and consideration. We look at the fabric of the building, the forward vision of the custodians, how it will be used for generations to come, and then design and create our unique furniture accordingly.

We use traditional methods of making to ensure longevity with a strong sense of classic proportion to complement the surrounding spaces. We create tables, bench seating, chairs, joinery and panelling to name a few. Our knowledge of period furniture in particular means we can design and make with confidence based on hundreds of years of tried and tested skills.

If you have a project for a school, university, public space, building of architectural note or place of worship you would like to talk to us about, please do get in touch for an informal discussion.

Case Study: Downside School Sixth Form Centre

Originally designed by Francis Pollen and finished in 1970, the old monks' refectory and cloister at Downside Abbey has been turned into a sixth form centre. Connecting the Neo-gothic buildings of the Monastery and Abbey to the school, the building is striking in its minimalist aesthetic, yet also has a warmth derived from the use of materials. Creating a space where all furniture had to be freestanding due to the building's Grade I listing, we strove to connect both ends of the design spectrum, bridging the two architectural styles. We relished the challenge!

Taking cues from the fabric of the surrounding buildings and reinterpreting them in our designs for oak furniture and partition screens has resulted in a timeless feel that unites old with new. We also specified the soft furnishings and the colour scheme, bringing cohesion to the space. The students love the feel of a mature environment which starts their journey towards further education as adults and has given them a space of their own to both study and socialise.
